Abstract

Rocks exposed in the Broken Ridge area consist of Miocene rhyolite lava flows, overlying Oligocene volcanic rocks and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The rhyolite flows are topaz-bearing and contain high amounts of silica, alkalies, tin, beryllium, fluorine, niobium, lithium, and rubidium. Widespread hydrothermal alteration is localized along numerous high-angle normal faults that cut the rhyolite. Cassiterite, fluorite, and hematite occur in a thoroughly silicified breccia body within the rhyolite flows immediately adjacent to a vent tuff at the north end of Broken Ridge. The breccia body contains anomalous concentrations of tin, antimony, arsenic, zinc, beryllium, and manganese.
