Abstract

Alluvial flood-plain and terrace deposits along the Feather and Yuba rivers in the Sacramento Valley of California that range from about 0.6 to 3,000 ka in age are described and interpreted. A volcaniclastic unit that underlies the alluvial sequence has an isotopic age of 3.2 ma and has been re-correlated. Several physical, chemical, and morphologic properties of relict soils on the alluvial deposits vary systematically with soil age and are described. The systematic changes in soil properties provide insight into near-surface weathering processes and provide a means to use soils in geologic studies.
